The Gagosian Gallery in Athens is presenting an exhibition with engravings in linoleum by Pablo Picasso on January 28 till April 10, 2010.

Picasso never stopped experimenting with various techniques of engraving, such as lithography, chalcography, monotype. At the end of 1950 he spend most of his time in South France, at a great distance from Paris where most of the typographers were, and that made the production of his works really hard. He started then to experiment with linoleum, and in a way he carved a design on a linoleum surface using a knife, or a chisel-tooler. His first engraving was Toros en Vallauris (1954), a simple black and white print, but by 1959 he had already decided to express himself exceptionally through this technique, the procedure of which had completely absorbed him. He used to work on a daily basis with Hidalgo Arnera, the area typographer.
