The panorama of an era in Greece, Romania and Bulgaria
Fifty five distinguished artists from Romania, Bulgaria and Greece and 120 of their most representative paintings form the complete panorama of Modernist art in the three countries. This survey will be on display at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation for Visual Arts and Music in Athens for two months, from March 10 to May 9, 2010. Before Athens, the exhibition Faces of Modernism: Bulgaria, Romania, Greece. Painting 1910-1940 had been presented in Bucharest and Sofia.
The 120 paintings on display -40 from each country- come from museums, galleries and private collections. As coordinator of the project Christos Carras notes, “the main idea for this exhibition is to propose a more balanced perspective of the art history in this area of the world, in the given time, by highlighting national and local characteristics as well as the numerous experiences which Bulgaria, Greece and Romania acquired through their assimilation of ideas, shapes and techniques that they imported from cosmopolitan cities of western Europe”.
The display is jointly organized by the B&M Theocharakis Foundation for Visual Arts and Music in Athens, the National Art Museum of Romania (where it was on show from October 1 until November 29, 2009) and the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Sofia (on show from December 17, 2009 to February 16, 2010).
