Urban Communities and Green Architecture, in Athens on December 12-18, 2011
David Orr, one of the most important environmental thinkers and proponents of our time, is coming to ECOWEEK 2011 in Athens, Grecee. David Orr will be the keynote speaker at ECOWEEK 2011 on Monday December 12, at 5:30 pm at the Athens College Theater. Admission free and open to the general public.
The lecture takes place with the generous support of the US Embassy of Greece, and in cooperation with the Athens College Alumni Association.
DAVID W. ORR is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics and Special Assistant to the President of OBERLIN COLLEGE and Executive Director of the OBERLIN PROJECT. He is the recipient of seven Honorary degrees and other awards including The Millennium Leadership Award from Global Green, the Bioneers Award, the National Wildlife Federation Leadership Award, and the Lyndhurst Prize. He has lectured at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has served as a Trustee for many organizations including the Rocky Mountain Institute (www.rmi.org), the Aldo Leopold Foundation (www.aldoleopold.org), and the Bioneers (www.bioneers.org).
His career as a scholar, teacher, writer, speaker, and entrepreneur spans fields as diverse as environment and politics, environmental education, campus greening, green building, ecological design, and climate change. He is the author of seven books and co-editor of three others. Among his books, ECOLOGICAL LITERACY (SUNY, 1992), EARTH IN MIND (1994/2004), THE NATURE OF DESIGN (2002), DESIGN ON THE EDGE (MIT, 2006), and HOPE IS AN IMPERATIVE: THE ESSENTIAL DAVID ORR (Island Press, 2010).
David Orr was featured in Leonoardo DiCaprio’s documentary ‘The 11th Hour’ on Climate Change.
Recent projects include the OBERLIN PROJECT and a two year $1.2 million collaborative project to define a 100 days climate action plan for the OBAMA ADMINISTRATION (www.climateactionproject.com).

ECOWEEK 2011 URBAN COMMUNITIES & GREEN ARCHITECTURE will then take place in Athens, Greece, featuring ‘green’ design workshops in cooperation with architects, designers, landscape architects and engineers.
ECOWEEK 2011 opening session and some of the ECOWEEK workshops will be hosted at the new AKTO Design School in Athens. Opening sessions are open to the public. Please review the program.
The ECOWEEK 2011 workshops will include ‘green’ interventions and landscape projects in the city of Athens – in cooperation with the City of Athens. Some of the projects are likely to lead to real projects.
ECOWEEK 2011 takes place under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, the City of Athens, and the Athens College Alumni Association.

The program for the week will include panel discussion on ecological building, ‘green’ urban interventions in Athens, and the screening of the film ‘Going for Green’ on the London 2012 Olympic projects (in cooperation with the British Council).
