The Fulbright Foundation in Greece (www.fulbright.gr) is pleased to announce the new 2012 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for outstanding foreign students. The award is designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology. The International Fulbright Science and Technology award is for PhD study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. The program is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the State Department (ECA) and aims to convey the message that the U.S. remains the premier destination for serious scientific study and research, and that America not only welcomes top notch talent, but also encourages future leaders to shape their careers through U.S. study. For 2012, approximately 40 awards will be granted worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. A worldwide competition for 2012 is conducted to select top Science and Technology Award PhD participants eligible for study and research at prestigious U.S. institutions. The program is fully funded for the first 3 years; After three years, U.S. universities are expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. Deadline for applications is May 20th , 2011.
PROGRAM DESIGN: The Fulbright Foundation is now soliciting nominations for candidates to participate in the 2012 Fulbright International Science and Technology Program. Fulbright Science and Technology Fellows will be enrolled for PhD study at top U.S. universities in eligible STEM fields for the academic year 2012-2013. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award is a worldwide competition for foreign students who seek to carry out Ph.D. study in eligible scientific fields.
The 18 eligible fields are: aeronautics and aeronautical engineering, agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only), astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences/engineering, energy, engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, industrial, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), environmental science/engineering (theoretical or science research-based focus only), geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences and systems (engineering focus only), materials science/engineering, mathematics, neurosciences, oceanography, public health (biostatistics or epidemiology) and physics.
Please note that this award is for applicants wishing to pursue theoretical and research-based study in STEM areas. Policy or social science research such as, environmental or health management, energy policy, research pertaining to analysis of health systems, etc., will not be considered. The Office of Academic Exchange Programs (ECA/A/E) of the United States Department of State will fund grants for up to three years for this Award. After three years, U.S. universities will fund the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. Institute of International Education (IIE) will exclusively handle student placement.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be citizens of Greece and must apply through the Fulbright Foundation in Greece (Vassilissis Sofias 6, 106 74 Athens, tel nr +30 210 724 1811 ext 3, email: greekprogram@fulbright.gr). Applicants must not be living in the U.S. at the time of application. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree from a Greek University on or before August 1, 2012, with a Grade Point Average of at least 8.0/10. Applicants should be proficient in English with a recent TOEFL score (or equivalent) of 580 or higher or IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. A GRE General Exam score will be required of at least 700 in the quantitative section. A GRE Subject Exam score will also be needed for all candidates in the following fields of study: biology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES & PACKAGE: Each applicant will need to register with the Fulbright Office in Greece (greekprogram@fulbright.gr) the latest by April 8, 2011 and will be required to submit an online Embark application along with all supporting documents. A complete online Embark application package includes:
- An online Embark application which includes:
- a clearly written research objective
- a clearly written personal statement
- a professional resume (CV)
- Three letters of reference (submitted electronically and attached to the online application OR official paper copiesl)
- Official academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended in Greek and English
- Score reports (as soon as available but prior to U.S. screening committee review).
- TOEFL or IELTS or other English language proficiency exam
- General GRE exam
- GRE Subject exam (if applicable and available)
Once submitted, the Fulbright Foundation in Greece will review and nominate candidates.
NOMINATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA: Initial screenings will be conducted by the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, 6 Vas. Sophias Avenue, 106 74 Athens.
U.S. SCREENING AND SELECTION: ECA will review nominees files and IIE will conduct a technical review of all nominee applications. Up to two principal nominees and one alternate nominee from each country will be reviewed by a U.S.-based selection committee, which will include prominent academics and professionals in the appropriate scientific fields. Selection of nominees will be determined by September 9, 2011. Candidates will be notified of their status by September 16, 2011.
U.S. UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT: The Institute of International Education (IIE), a Fulbright cooperating agency, will be responsible for placement of all Fulbright Science and Technology award nominees. IIE will work closely with the Fulbright Foundation in Greece and nominees to ensure the best placement available for the nominee’s field of study and research interests. ECA will approve of all final placements.
FUNDING: All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend which covers room, board, and incidental expenses for up to three years; health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, specially tailored enrichment activities and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three years, U.S. universities either fully fund or work with the grantee to identify funding options for Ph.D. degree completion.
VISA SPONSORSHIP: Grantees will receive J-1 visa sponsorship under the Fulbright Student Program for three years starting approximately August 2011. After three years, ECA will transfer sponsorship to the host university assuming satisfactory continuing progress toward Ph.D. completion. Grantees not able to secure an entry visa to arrive in time for their program start date may lose their fellowships. Selected candidates must provide IIE with a valid passport prior to the issuance of form DS 2019. Grantees should have a valid passport for the 5-year period.
