Quality Management and Greek Schools: Is this the Future for Sustainable Improvements and Change?
Author: Mosaiko EditorPosted on: Jan 15th 2010
Few schools, if any, claim perfection; very few schools, also, admit that they are hopelessly bad. Most schools, it is safe to assume, wish that they were better in some way or the other. For those schools seeking to change themselves, to create a better learning environment, or to improve the students’ performance, the major challenge is how best to go about achieving such goals. The sustainability of any improvements and basic changes is crucial as well. Without sustainability “Excellence” in education is ephemeral.
The two day conference, organized by the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation at the College Theater in Psychico on January 22 & 23, 2010 will feature speakers from Athens College and Psychico College, Greek universities, Greek private schools and consultants. They will provide the background to the theory and practice of Quality Management, examples and experiences of Quality Management approaches at work in Greek schools and elsewhere and efforts to bring Quality Management to Greek tertiary education. A concluding Round Table Discussion with all of the participants will address the question what could be the future for Quality Management in Greek schools. The papers will be in Greek or English with simultaneous translation.
The conference will provide ample opportunities for practitioners to compare experiences and insights. For those schools contemplating initiating Quality Management the program will illustrate clearly what is involved and what to expect.
School administrators, teachers, school governing boards, Ministry of Education policy planners and senior administrators, the media and interested parents are the intended audience. It is estimated that 200 individuals will attend.

The factor of different culture of students from different socioeconomic classes is the reason of why many students have to chose between their self respect and the approval of their teacher.Students having different model of behavior language and culture experience differently education.Adolescents of lower socioeconomic classes experience and understand education as social change, while students of upper and middle socio economic classes as social evolution. In my research about this topic, 60% of students supported that the language they speak in school is differetn fron the language they speak in their home and 59% of the students sustained that teachers try to change the culture and the way students operate.80% of the students claimed that teachers are not familiat with them and in the case of a specific problem of them, students address themrselves to their fellow students not to theit teachers.
It would be a challenge for students better operation in school if the elements of their civilization and language could be expresed in their school’ culture and communication. Then students could have the opportunity to be more self disciplined, because more disciplined students are those who respond to the stimuli of education independently of their need for autonomy.
